Retmus Philosophy & Principles

Since choosing plastic surgery as my specialty, I have always focused on the close observation of the human face. Through years of training from residency to completing my doctoral studies, I came to realize, more than ever before, how incredibly diverse human faces are in their forms and expressions.

As I explained surgical techniques and made quick sketches on charts or during surgical design, those small drawings gradually accumulated. Over time, I found myself deeply drawn to the art of portraiture and the beauty of capturing the human face.

Precise Balance, Natural Beauty

( Artistic Sense Retmus )

When shaping the contours of a face, I begin by sketching carefully, starting with the overall structure, then considering the proportions of the eyes, nose, and lips. To bring the drawing to life and add a sense of depth, I fill in the raised and recessed areas, even the deeply sunken parts, building up the form step by step while paying attention to the gradations of light and shade. Even a subtle change can alter a person’s entire impression, which is why experience and constant practice are essential.

Plastic surgery is no different. It begins with the foundation of facial contour and proportion, followed by the details, the eyes, nose, and lips.
Surgery is neither simple nor easy. It must be grounded in medical science, yet harmonized with artistic sensibility. There are many surgeons who excel at operating on individual features, but few true specialists who understand and refine the entire face as a whole.

The word “art” originates from the Latin “ars”, which in turn comes from the Greek word “techne”, meaning “a rational act of creation governed by principles.”

In that sense, no other field of medicine embodies the unity of science and art quite like plastic surgery does.
