Retmus Plastic Surgery
What is Autologous Cartilage?
Autologous nose revision surgery uses the patient’s own tissue for revision procedures.
Since the tissue naturally integrates within the body, the procedure is stable and
carries a lower risk of complications, resulting in a natural and harmonious outcome.
Among autologous tissues, autologous cartilage is harvested from the ear, septum, or rib.
It reduces the risk of complications from synthetic implants and
provides a strong supporting structure for the nasal tip and dorsum.
The procedure is performed through an internal incision inside the nostrils, leaving almost no external scarring. With a texture similar to natural cartilage, it ensures a natural and stable result.
Retmus Plastic Surgery
Your Own Tissue That Lasts Over Time, Autologous Tissue
At Retmus Plastic Surgery, we prioritize safety and natural results by focusing on autologous tissue–based procedures,
using the materials most compatible with the human body.
At Retmus, we select the optimal autologous tissue for each patient’s individual condition
and perform personalized surgery tailored to their needs.

Types of Autologous Cartilage
Here is an overview of the autologous cartilage used at Retmus Plastic Surgery.
Autologous Cartilage
(Costal Cartilage)
This is autologous cartilage that can provide a sufficient amount.
It is soft yet strong, making it suitable for
revisional rhinoplasty or cases where tip support is weak.
It is harvested via an incision of about 2.5 cm below the chest and used to reinforce the tip support and overall nasal structure.
Ear Cartilage
(Auricular Cartilage)
This cartilage is the most commonly used,
as there is almost no visible harvesting site.
It naturally reinforces the tip shape.
A small portion is harvested from behind the ear and placed on the upper portion of the nasal tip to strengthen it.
Septal Cartilage
(Septal Cartilage)
This cartilage is harvested
from inside the nose.
It is mainly effective for nasal lengthening.
A portion is taken from the septum and used to extend the septal support and secure a stable nasal length.
What is Autologous Cartilage Carving?
Autologous Cartilage Carving
When septal or ear cartilage cannot be used due to multiple previous surgeries, or when severe contracture requires stronger support, rib cartilage is used. Costal cartilage provides sufficient volume and high strength, making it effective for stable reinforcement of the nasal structure.
Harvested rib cartilage must undergo a precise carving process according to its intended use. The skill in carving greatly influences the surgical outcome.
At Retmus, Dr. Chung carefully carves the cartilage for each patient, taking into account individual tissue characteristics and nasal shape. This customized cartilage design allows for highly precise and tailored surgical results.

Academic Activities
Retmus Plastic Surgery
Precise Preoperative Diagnosis Through 3D-CT Analysis
At Retmus Plastic Surgery, we actively use 3D-CT imaging to analyze the internal condition of the nose, which is difficult to assess visually.
- Assess the degree of nasal deviation and septal deviation
- Evaluate nasal obstruction
- Analyze the shape and size of the septal cartilage
- Examine the width and structure of the nasal bones

Autologous Tissue Approach
Key Points of
Revisional Nose Surgery
The Difference of Autologous Nose Revision Performed Personally by Dr. Seung-il Chung
-
- Improvement of the Nasolabial Angle
- With delicate design that considers the harmony between the nasal tip and philtrum, the nasolabial angle is corrected to an ideal degree, creating a more refined and three-dimensional facial appearance.
-
- Minimizing Inflammation and Complications
- By using autologous tissue instead of synthetic implants, the risk of foreign body reaction and contracture is reduced. Only the necessary areas are minimally dissected, minimizing unnecessary tissue damage.
-
-
- Natural Nasal Contour
- Using the patient’s own tissues (autologous dermis, fascia, and cartilage), the nose is stably integrated within the body, achieving a natural contour that harmonizes with the face without appearing excessive.
